Most American fans grew up watching the English dub(s) of the show from FUNimation. Most fans are most familiar with the in-house voice cast that started FUNimation’s in-house dub in season three (the previous utilising the Ocean Studios voice cast). FUNimation later went on to re-dub these two seasons, using mostly the same scripts. But some things were changed.
The most annoying, to me, is the word “Kamehame-Ha”. Now, we all know this iconic word to be the name of Dragon Ball’s most iconic move. The American dub brought it as the “Kamehameha Wave”, for reasons unknown. FUNimation really screwed it with this, and I will explain why.
When Akira Toriyama was making an iconic move for the series, he wanted to keep it simple, something he could remember. He asked for his wife’s opinion, and she came up with a move named after the Hawaiian King Kamehameha (pronounced “Kah-MAY-ah-MAY-ah”). Toriyama adapted this into Japanese and created “Kamehame-Ha”, translated “Turtle Striking Wave”.
Kame (カメ) = Turtle
Hame (ハメ) = Striking
Ha (波) = Wave
So basically, FUNimation’s version of the term, “Kamehameha Wave”, literally would translate to “Turtle Striking Wave Wave”. That just looks completely wrong even though they don’t say that. And the pronunciation of the word is how the king’s name is pronounced, but this is wrong as well! The correct pronunciation of the word is how Toriyama remade it for the Japanese, which is “KAH-meh-HAH-meh-HA”. Even the Ocean dub pronounces it correctly!
Dragon Ball Kai’s English dub (also by FUNimation) also pronounces the term correctly, and omitted the “wave” at the end entirely.
Also, the Dragon Ball movie 1 dub (dubbed by FUNimation in 2010), pronounces it correctly, but still keeps the “wave” at the end, which is halfway fixed.
All in all, why this move’s name was pronounced wrongly in the first place boggles my mind. Just another reason to point out why the English version of the show is inferior to the original (in my opinion).
